Pepper’s Ghost: ISPT Madame Brussels Laneway Competition
This project is an abstract representation of the past that uses reclaimed and easy-to-maintain materials, with a focus on sound, light, and sight exploration. The name Pepper’s Ghost is taken from the Pepper’s Ghost pipe found and displayed on this site as an artifact. A Pepper’s Ghost is a 19th-Century theatrical illusion technique where the use of mirrors and translucent panels work together to create ghost-like characters.
The site has a significant story to tell, specifically in its development of Melbourne’s identity. It has to be executed in a manner that can be immersive and ‘sticky’ to ensure value can be created for the public realm as well as the business owners on-site, which is what Pepper’s Ghost is all about.
